Dear Family of Faith,

November 5th was the fourteenth anniversary of the first service of Christ UM Church.  I love telling people the story of our family of faith which, in its infancy, operated like concert “roadies.”  Members unpacked and repacked “Sunday school, nursery, and the sanctuary” in plastic bins after each Sunday service in the Culbreth Middle School auditorium.  That first Christmas, the small band of members gathered for their first fellowship event at Mariakakis Restaurant. In 1995, it was a modest celebration, 30 adults and children total, but each one present felt called by God to help write the first chapter of His-story for Christ Church.

As a member of the Christ Church family, you were also called by God to this place to help Him write His-story.  The story of our faith community is an amazing tale of God transforming the lives of individuals as we worship Him and seek, nurture, and send disciples into our community and the world.  Your financial gifts and your service to our church family are the tools God uses to write His-story, and your faithfulness in these areas is more important than ever as we prepare expectantly for all God will continue to do in this place as He writes Christ Church's chapters for 2010.

Your financial gift matters greatly to the writing of God’s story in this place.  Am I sure your gift matters?  Indeed, I am.  Your gifts and service matter because God uses them to create:

  • A place to come each week where the voice of God is heard through the words, music, and meditation time of worship.
  • An opportunity for all of us to grow in our Christian faith and fellowship through small groups such as Disciple Bible Study and adult Sunday school.
  • A safe haven to receive pastoral care when trouble comes into our lives through sickness, death, job loss, separation, or divorce.
  • A Christian family to join you in celebrating life’s important milestones – births, confirmations of faith, marriages, and the transition from life to life everlasting.
  • A community of peers for youth and children of all ages to learn and fellowship with and live out their budding Christian faith in service to others.
  • A missions-minded congregation that is a faithful witness to Christ’s love and compassion for all His children.

As I reflect on the fourteen year history of Christ Church, I am grateful for the growth our congregation has experienced.  Men, women, and children have met Christ here and have matured in their faith to love and serve Him more.  God continues to call a diverse group of people to Christ Church, but no matter how this church grows, no one else can contribute to the chapter God has determined is yours, and yours alone, to “write.”  You matter to this family of faith, and in addition to your prayers and service, your church—God’s church—needs you to pledge your service and financial resources to continue the Christ Church story in 2010.

Let each member of CUMC answer God’s call to make His-story known in our community and the world today, tomorrow, and until He comes again.

Peace of Christ,  Pastor Steve McElroy
